An implant has three parts. The post is a small titanium screw that sits in the jawbone where the root used to be. The abutment connects the post to the tooth you see. The crown is made in a lab to match the shape and shade of your other teeth.
Because bone needs time to grow around the post, the work is done in stages rather than in one sitting. Between stages you can usually wear a temporary tooth, so you are not left with a gap at work or in photos.
Implants can also hold a bridge or a full denture in place. For people who struggle with a loose lower denture, two to four implants can make it far more stable.
